Functional Reflex Therapy
Rainbow Relaxation Routine |
||
Functional
Reflex
Therapy is based on the theory and practice of
Reflexology. The therapist uses a combination of
movements of their hands, fingers and thumbs over specific
areas and specific reflex points of the client’s feet and
lower legs, or their hands and forearms if they find it
uncomfortable to have their feet touched. These
movements are delivered in a flowing style, with each
movement being repeated in a routine which usually lasts
for approximately 15 - 20 minutes and provides a sense of
calmness and relaxation.

Functional Reflex Therapy was established by Lorraine Senior who is an experienced teacher working with children with Special Educational Needs, and also a Reflexologist. Functional Reflex Therapy offers a unique relaxation routine supported with the FRT tool kit and is already being used as a timetabled therapy in schools and also at home for children and young adults with Autism, other non-specific communication difficulties, learning difficulties, neurological impairment and complex needs. It is also used in care homes with adults who are affected by conditions such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. This form of therapy can also be used by anyone to achieve relaxation, which can help in dealing with stressful situations in any environment - for children and adults - at school, at work or at home. |

Functional Reflex Therapy in
Schools |
||
The primary outcome of Reflexology using the Functional Reflex Therapy Approach is relaxation. The therapy encourages the body to relax and relieve tension through a combination of positive touch and relaxation techniques. The intention is to stimulate the many well-being hormones in the brain that help to create calming conditions which may encourage a better focus, concentration and receptiveness. For children at school, it can help in their personal preparation for learning and ongoing activities. |
||
Functional Reflex Therapy has a clear aim, intention and structure, offering a pleasant, positive, valuable well-being and relaxing experience and is accessible to all pupils. I use objects of reference to help in the preparation for the session and to aid communication eg. Makaton signs and symbols, PECS, TEACCH and other forms of augmentative aids, all of which can support the transition to and from the classroom and therapy environment. |
||
I have 17 years’ experience in school and community settings, as a Specialist Nursery Nurse (SEN) and as a Family Worker, respectively, working with children with various special needs, including Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities, Social and Communication Difficulties, Physical Disabilities, Developmental Delay and other specific conditions. I am accustomed to working both independently and also as part of the multi-disciplinary team. |

Functional Reflex Therapy for
Adults |
||
The principles in
providing Functional Reflex Therapy for adults are the
same as for children - providing relaxation and helping to
relieve feelings of stress, anxiety and depression.
These are symptoms that can be associated with various
illnesses and conditions, including Dementia and
Alzheimer's. Functional Reflex Therapy can also assist pain relief and aid restful sleep. Treatment also stimulates the physical aspects of the body, such as the circulatory system, which is particularly important for those with limited mobility. |
||
For those affected
by Dementia or Alzheimer's, who may be unsettled by an
unfamiliar person delivering the treatment, this can be
provided with a person that they know being present with
them. |
||
In all cases the
recipient must give their consent in some way before
receiving treatment. |
||
For adult residential settings,
day centres, activity / support groups and agencies
that provide care at home for their clients, and who
wish to provide Functional Reflex Therapy themselves
for residents / attendees / clients in their own homes,
please contact me for further details regarding
workshops for staff / carers.

Family Workshops |

Preparing parents, grandparents older
siblings and primary carers to deliver the |

Functional Reflex Therapy Rainbow Relaxation Routine | ||
to use with their own family |
||
I am able to
provide individual treatment sessions for children and
adults, as detailed above. In addition to this, I
also provide workshops, enabling family members and
primary carers to provide this treatment for their loved
ones themselves, so that these soothing and relaxing
techniques can be available whenever they are
needed. The routine is not only relaxing for the
recipient, but it is also relaxing for the provider!
|
||
2 workshops are
available, each lasting approximately 2½ hours, and which
are usually completed over 2 consecutive weeks. The
workshops are designed to be fun as well as informative.
|
||
I provide
workshops for individual family groups in their home
environment. Ideally a minimum of 2 people are
required to attend the workshops as it not only includes
demonstration, information and guidance on delivering the
techniques correctly, but also opportunity to practice the
techniques on each other, and experience for yourselves
just how relaxing receiving the treatment can be.
